Lake Winnipesaukee is the largest lake in New Hampshire, the third largest in New England and is bordered by eight cities and towns: Alton, Center Harbor, Gilford, Laconia, Meredith, Moultonborough, Tuftonboro and Wolfeboro. It is said, its name comes from an Indian term meaning "Smile of the Great Spirit". It's home to the Sophie C. the oldest floating post office in the U.S. and the only mailboat on an inland waterway. In mid-January, it typically will freeze over and ice out is not declared until the M/S Mount Washington can successfully navigate to all of its ports of call, any time from March to May depending on temperatures.
It's home to 365 islands with 274 being habitable. Long Island and Bear Island are among the largest and Becky's Island is the smallest. Stonedam Island is a wildlife preserve accessible by boat and Rattlesnake Island has a 400 foot rocky peak that can be climbed. You'll find many different species of fish here with salmon, rainbow trout, bass and cusk just to name a few.
